Full-body tracking

Bring your legs into VR. Add three SteamVR trackers and VR Realms tracks your real feet and hips. Kick, crouch and dance, and everyone in the session sees it. Completely optional: without trackers, nothing changes.

The short version. Strap on a waist tracker and one on each foot, assign their roles in SteamVR, launch the game, and calibrate once. Your avatar’s legs and hips follow you, and other players see it live.

How it works

A standard VR setup tracks three points, the headset and two controllers, and VR Realms estimates the rest of your body. That looks good for the upper body, but the game is guessing at your legs.

With full-body tracking, three extra trackers give the game your real waist and foot positions. VR Realms pins your avatar’s feet to your actual feet and drives the hips from your waist, so steps, kicks, crouches, twists and dance moves come through as you make them. Foot tilt is tracked too: point your toes or roll to your heel and the avatar’s foot follows.

Your tracked body is streamed to everyone in the session. If a tracker drops out mid-session, the avatar smoothly eases back to the standard body estimate instead of glitching, and picks the trackers back up when they return.

What you need

  • PC VR through SteamVR: any headset that runs VR Realms, including Quest over Link, as long as SteamVR is in the chain.
  • Three SteamVR-compatible trackers: for example HTC Vive Trackers or Tundra Trackers, with base stations covering your play space. One on a belt/waist strap, one on each foot (ankle straps or shoe mounts).
  • Tracker roles in SteamVR: Settings → Controllers → Manage Trackers → set Waist, Left Foot, and Right Foot before launching the game.
Roles matter. The game finds trackers by SteamVR role. Unassigned or duplicate roles mean full-body simply won’t engage. Setting them once is remembered for future sessions.

Auto-detection, with nothing to enable

No settings toggle. On spawn, VR Realms looks for Waist / Left Foot / Right Foot:

  • All three found and tracking? Full-body mode arms and waits for calibration.
  • No trackers? You get the standard 3-point body, same as everyone else. Nothing changes.

Take trackers off mid-session and the game returns to the standard body; put them back on and recalibrate to re-engage.

Calibrating

Calibration teaches the game where your trackers sit on your body, and takes about two seconds:

  1. Stand near the middle of your play space.
  2. Stand upright, feet flat, roughly shoulder-width apart.
  3. Look forward, the same direction as your body.
  4. Open the in-game menu and hit Calibrate.

If you were mid-turn when you pressed it, the game waits for you to face forward before capturing. Recalibrate any time. One good standing calibration fully recovers from a bad pose, and doubles as a body reset.

Playing seated

Calibrating while seated is supported, and your avatar can stand at normal height so nobody can tell you’re in a chair. Stand up later and the game can auto-recalibrate. Prefer the avatar to sit when you sit? Calibrate while standing instead.

Tips for clean tracking

TipWhy
Strap trackers snugLoose trackers wobble independently of your body.
Calibrate at center of play spaceStanding far off-center can produce a rejected or sloppy calibration.
Good base-station coverageFeet and waist occlude easily; two stations at opposite corners, high and angled down, help.
Face forward for calibrateBody and head need to agree on “forward” at capture.
Weird pose? RecalibrateOne standing recalibration resets the whole body solve.

Status

Full-body tracking is in the game now, free like everything else, and still being tuned with the people who use it. Optional: players without trackers are unaffected and share the same sessions.

Trackers not picked up, or something feels off? Tell us in the help forum on Discord and say which trackers you use. Full-body feedback is especially welcome.
